Metal deck roofing

Some people might find it difficult to decide on the choice of roofing they want to establish in their premises. Well, metal deck roofing is a modern type of roofing system composed of metal pieces and different alloys such as steel, copper, or aluminum– characterized for its durability, high resistance, and quality. This aesthetic metal roofing is manufactured and designed through a process known as roll forming, with large metal sheets pulled off the rolls, and they are passed through a rolling die to create the corrugated form.

Besides roofing, metal decking is in a wide variety of areas such as floor decking and the designing of concrete. However, commonly used in industrial and commercial sectors. Metal deck roofing has ranked up through popularity based on its affordability, utilization, and availability. So, there a few varieties of this kind of roofing that vary according to various features like material and durability. Here are some of the different categories in metal deck roofing.

  1. Copper decking

This premium material has been significant as a roofing material for many years. It was commonly used for prestigious roofing places like churches, temples, and even in castles during medieval times. What makes copper unique, is it does not require a finishing touch since it has a distinct look compared to all other roofing materials.

It is durable and has a unique feature that no roofing material has. As it ages, it turns color from red-brown to green. Besides, it is a convenient deck as a roofing material, it is expensive and is more substantial compared to other roofing materials such as steel.

  1. Aluminum decking

Aluminum is the lighter alternative between the steel and standard steel roofs. It is coated with natural zinc, a form of galvanization to make the material impermeable from rust and corrosion. It has a soft-shinny surface with a palette color. However, the owner can paint the roofing material in any color.

It has secured a spot in the market, commonly known for its affordability and its flexibility in roofing. However, the major con with aluminium decking, you require, new structures to support the deck roofing material.

  1. Steel decking

This material has been recognized for its durability and better quality, and commonly referred to as the best roofing material. Due to its fame, it has become the standard and primary material used in the roofing system. It gained this fame through its resistance to harsh climatic conditions, sturdiness, and durability – lasting a lifespan of up to 70 years.

They are easy to install, while fitting a linear pattern, created to increase the support and strength of the roofing materials. Steel decking has a simple but stylish design besides it being it is, economical and of high quality thus requires minimal maintenance.

It is quite expensive compared to the standard roofing materials, due to its ability to resist rust and corrosion through galvanizsation, hence improving the durability of the material. The metal-coated to enhance its resilience and color, making it attractive and commonly preferred in this era.

  1. The acoustical metal decking

It is made of stainless steel designed into ribs through the roll forming process. The metal decks are indented and filled with acoustical batting which allows sound absorption in varying degrees. Specially designed and thoroughly tested for its noise reduction coefficient. There is the ability of the decking material to absorb sound from the surface and averaged over occulting frequencies.

Due to its flexibility, they have dominated the market and commonly used in facilities that require to control the sound produced, e.g. studios. This material is best for roofing facilities to build in curves since it, folds it is convenient for such type of deck roofing, e.g. Stadiums.

The metal deck roofs are insulated to increase sturdiness and upgrade the material’s thermal insulation and its ability to resist fire. Achieved when the metal deck roofing structure fills with stone wool insulation in between the steel mesh and corrugated plates, spun on top of the purlins vertically deadbolt.

Coating and Construction of Metal Deck Roofing

Several types of metal coatings are manufactured to prevent the metal material from rust and corrosion, waterproof and thermal insulation. It is composed of various materials such as ceramic or epoxy – coatings from ceramic increase the thermal insulation of the material by adding properties that are heat reflective. Most are made of paints or ceramic beads. The coating of the metal deck material preserves the natural color of the material, metallic tone, and warmth.

Construction of the metal deck roofing should be installed with battens rather than using solid decking, which might later pose serious condensation issues due to damage on the metal roof. So the choice on the type of roofing panels you are going to use to fit the roofing material depends on the kind of property.

Such as residential it is advisable to use the battens in metal roofing. The battens allow the wood shingles to attach the metal to dry on both sides, preventing it from decaying and deterioration caused by trapping moisture, also referred to as purlins or straps. They are boards that run horizontally across a construction structure, spaced with a calculated distance between each other, and then the metal pieces are drilled or nailed over them.

Another option of installing a metal deck roofing system is over a solid deck. It is easily attached to the floor. Scientists and researchers are engaging in ways to deal with defects of metal roofing. The common problem of condensation accumulating in the room from the back sides of the roofing panels is due to the effect of the natural airflow through the ventilation. This condensation is toxic to the human body since it can affect the breathing system

Choosing the right contractor to install the metal deck roofing materials should be highly considered. This because it requires time and patience, installing the roofing materials, and it can be stressful.

Metal deck roofing has several advantages such as its recognition of its ability to last longer, approximately for over 100 years with manufacturers offering 50 years warranty. Due to its durability, the metal roofs sell at an affordable price. Its lightweight quality makes it suitable for older structures since it can maintain the structural integrity of the facility. The major disadvantage of metal deck roofing is the noise creation caused by heavy rains.
